The Trial of Davy Crockett: A Fascinating Meeting of Minds
I read "The Trial of Davy Crockett" by Fletcher Rhoden last week. From the moment I picked it up I couldn't put it down, and now that I've finished reading it I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. It's an extremely well-written and carefully-crafted piece, and the author obviously took great pains with his research. I'm interested in Texas history, but I'm certainly not an aficionado of the genre. What really fascinated me was the humanistic approach that Rhoden took with the meeting of these two larger-than-life historical characters, Davy Crockett and Generalissimo Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, at the battle for the Alamo. It somehow combined the fanciful, what-if philosophy of "The Last Temptation of Christ" with the delicious possibilities presented in the best episodes of "Meeting of Minds or Steve Martin's wonderful play, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile". I recommend this book to anyone interested in American history, but more importantly, to anyone who enjoys a chance to listen in on what might have transpired beween great men with great thoughts had they had the opportunity to really get into each other's heads.

Thought provoking view of Latino History
The Trial of Davy Crockett offers more than simply a must for Texas history buffs. In this novella, based in fact, author Fletcher Rhoden examines a dynamic character in Santa Anna and in so doing allows the reader a compelling account of Mexican history at a time when that country was shrinking under American expansionism. A subject all too often ignored by many American historians. The character of Davy Crockett does not wane in the shadow of Santa Anna. Written in a style so unique and intelligent, the reader cannot help but to keep turning the page. Santa Anna has become a sort of ogre in American eyes because of the slaughter at the Alamo and the brutality of the massacre at Goliad. The author's presentation of this dynamic historical period through the eyes of Santa Anna, definately gives the reader a thought provoking view of Latino History.

A "must" for Texas history buffs and not to be missed
The Trial Of Davy Crockett is a speculative fiction novella. Author Fletcher Rhoden questions whether Davy Crockett was truly killed during the battle for the Alamo - or whether he was captured and executed by the Mexicans. The Trial Of Davy Crockett presents a hypothetical dialogue between Crockett and Generalissimo Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, which collide in an articulate, wry, thought-provoking, and no-holds-barred verbal conflict regarding the Texian Revolution and America's unrestrained expansionism. Neither Crockett or Santa Anna is stereotyped in the roles of hero or villain; their opposing points of view are given a clear and fair hearing, for all to see and judge for themselves. Based entirely on the facts of the revolution, The Trial Of Davy Crockett is a "must" for Texas history buffs and not to be missed.

Angels of the Lord: Calling upon Your Guardian Angel for Guidance and Protection
Published in Paperback by Global Communication Network (March, 1993)

INTO HEAVENLY REALMS
First off someone obviously made an error when originally posting this title -- cause the book just isnt l200 pages; its more like $l20, but the price is right anyway when you consider all the information you are going to receive upon cracking this book open. One thing you will not find is a book of lofty thought and religious philosophy -- in fact this is more of a how to book; a how to contact you guardian angel guide. For the authors see the subject in a ore magickal light, believing that angels are basicly invisible beings we can contact for guidance and protection and to bring riches and prosperity into our lives. There are all sorts of catagories of angels and benefits we can look for and ways and means to actually contact them and have them answer our prayers. There are even, say the authors, good times and bad times to try and communicate with these other worldly beings -- and you can even smoke them out sort of by burning candles and incense (in this regard also get yourself a copy of CANDLE BURNING WITH THE PSALMS, by Wm Alexander Oribello)to attract their attention. If you are a non believer this book will do nothing to convince you. But if you are looking for a practical way to find out all about your own individual guardian angel this is probably the best book available on the subject!

Don't Leave Home Without One
Have you ever wondered if you have a guardian angel? The belief that a benevolent presence is watching over us on an individual and personal level has persisted throughout the ages, and there is a huge amount of folklore and modern day true-life experiences that serve to reinforce the ancient belief that we have someone to watch over us when the game gets rough.

In "Angels of the Lord," coauthors Arthur Crockett and Timothy Green Beckley tackle the daunting task of explaining a subject for which not much raw data exists. You may be surprised to learn that just how little we really know about angels, but the authors do their utmost to fill in the gaps of mystery and uncertainty that come with the territory of what angels are and how they operate in our earthly plane.

The book includes an overview of many of the angel-related verses from both the Old and New Testaments. The implications of those verses teach us many things, such as the fact that angels sometimes appear in human form, usually without wings, and even eat and drink along with their mortal hosts. Stories such as the rescue of the prophet Daniel from the lions' den by an angel and the angels who came to minister to Jesus after his struggle against the devil in the wilderness remind us all that angels played a key role in many of the events in scripture.

But stories from more recent times are included as well. Particularly interesting are the reports that have come down to us from soldiers who fought in the wars of the last couple of centuries. There is more than one account in which the tide of a battle is mysteriously turned by the presence of a battalion of angels who step in and rescue the Allies from total annihilation by the Germans.

Just as fascinating are some of the real life anecdotes about people who are delivered from near-fatal accidents or other tragedies by the sudden appearance of an angel. There are many books filled with those kinds of stories, but it's always wonderful to read some new ones. These are instances where the angel's intervention was seen and understood, but, the authors ask, how about the numerous other times they were present to help us and we didn't see them at all?

As to the authors' claim that one can be taught how to contact one's own guardian angel, perhaps that is best left to the individual reader's discretion. Still, the reader may be surprised to learn that many experiences that had been filed away as bizarre and difficult to understand were actually instances when a guardian angel had come to the rescue once again. One might see certain experiences in a different light after reading "Angels of the Lord."

In any case, Crockett and Beckley favor us with an all too brief but nevertheless quite marvelous look at the historical and practical aspects of angels that not only informs and educates but also inspires.

Crockett's victory garden
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: James Underwood Crockett

A First-Rate Reference Book For Gardeners
I have been a gardener for over twenty years, and I have had opportunities to examine several books on the subject. Without question, Crockett's Victory Garden is the best book about gardening that I have ever read for two reasons.

First, James Crockett wrote with a passion for the subject. His book featured personal anecdotes about the challenges that both he and his co-workers faced at the beginning of the TV show; such as, the problem of converting an abandoned lot into the fertile garden that would become the focus of the show. He also shared his wisdom by responding to various questions from gardeners.

Second, the book was very well organized. Mr. Crockett took the reader through the experience of gardening in a concise, month-by-month basis instructing one on what to plant and when and how to do it. The book was written in layman's terms, making it both enjoyable and easy to read.

Sadly, James Crockett died several years ago, but his work will continue to influence gardeners both young and old for many years to come. I heartily recommend this book to everyone with a passion for gardening!

The Best Yet
This is the best gardening book i have come across in many years. it has all the information that i have been looking for. I have spring fever so bad due to the topics and directions that Jim has given in his book.

Davy Crockett's Own Story: The Autobiography of America's Great Folk Hero (Legends of the West)

Authors: Davy Crockett, Milton Glaser, and David Crockett

Kevin Costner where are you
A great read, full of Crocketism that I grew up with. Someone should make a proper movie of this book, similar to Last of the Mohicans, with a bit of grunt Disney might have got it right. Maybe Kevin Costner could change his Lincoln Green outfit to Buckskins and give it a go!

A great book, capturing a colorful first-hand look at the US
A great personal record of historical events in the early 1800's. Colorful language and a first hand look at such timely subjects as politics, politicians, women in the work place, Indians, war, and freedom; before the revisionists have a chance to make history politically correct.

The Deepest Wound : How a Journey to El Salvador Led to Healing from Mother-Daughter Incest
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (December, 2001)
Author: Linda Crockett
Average review score:

Profoundly candid, deeply moving
The Deepest Wound: How A Journey To El Salvador Led To Healing From Mother-Daughter Incest by Linda Crockett, is a powerful and personal testimony of her own life journey that draws parallels between healing from sadistic parental abuse and recovering from political torture. An insightful journey to how the scars of terrible, repeated trauma can be accepted, and adapted, without sacrificing one's ability to pursue hopes and dreams. The Deepest Wound is profoundly candid, deeply moving and highly recommended reading.

Wisdom of a Survivor of Childhood Abuse
This incredible journey of what happens when "Mother" is the abuser and father disconnects setting a tiny soul adrift is the most powerful I've ever read. This book is a must read for: Anyone who doubts the depth of destruction that can be caused by those entrusted with the gift of a child; survivors who need to recognize emerging symptoms and understand that they can confront their pain and follow Linda's new paradigm to healing; friends and family who contemplate approaching or accompanying a survivor on their journey to healing; therapists and doctors that seek to enter the dangerouis minefield surrounding survivors; and, watchers, for whom this book may instill the courage to intercede on behalf of a child.
It takes courage to read this book. Those that do will never take a shallow view of childhood abuse again.
At the close of this book, readers will recognize the author as a remarkably courageous woman who shattered myths and created new pathways as she fought her way from Hell to healing.

deserts every night
This is a great book for anyone watching their sugar or fat intake !

Best Diabetic Cookbook Ever published
I've owned a copy of this book for 2 years, and it is not an exaggeration to say I consult it at least once a week. The recipes produce sumptuous goodies, not one of which has that peculiar "diet" flavor, so often found in homemade diabetic desserts. These desserts are sweetened with a variety of sweeteners including aspartame, acesulfame-K, saccharin, brown sugar substitue, regular sugar and brown sugar; used both alone and in combination. Many old favorites are found within the covers of this unassuming book, including a genuine Plain Yellow Cake, which is easier than some diabetic mixes. Fudgy Brownies, tangy Lemon Bars, Rich Sour Cream and Raisin Pie, and my personal favorite, Monster Cookies, are all provided in an easy to follow format, which always produces the results you expect. These recipes simply don't fail. Each recipe contains exchange information, and most include variations to reduce the cholesterol and sodium as well. Several recipes include whole grains, like whole wheat flour or oatmeal. Most can be prepared simply with the items already found in the cupboard, adding built in convience. Best of all, almost all of the goodies are reduced in fat, and all include a calorie count.

Harold and the Purple Crayon (Spanish edition) : Harold y el lapiz color morado
Published in Hardcover by RAYO (May, 1995)
Author: Crockett Johnson
Average review score:

Purple classic.
My mother teaches preschool to mostly Spanish-speakers, so this was a must have. A very good translation of the beloved English classic.

Tan encantador en español como en inglés (Just as charming)
Even grownups enjoy this imaginative story of a boy whose purple crayon takes him on a magical journey. The Spanish translation retains all the magic of the English original, such that a friend in his 20s became glued to the book when I first brought it to his attention. Caution: Although the story is understandable to children as young as 3 or 4, it is longer than it looks! Begin the story only if you are prepared to read for a little while, but once you do, you'll enjoy the trip.

Harold Saves Christmas
It's Christmas Eve, Harold doesn't have his tree yet and he decides he needs one before Santa arrives. So armed with his imagination and his purple crayon, Harold sets off for the north woods to find the perfect tree. He follows the north star, encounters a blizzard, meets a snowman and continues to "draw" his way to the North Pole. There he finds Santa in trouble. He's snowed in and can't get his sleigh, reindeer and sack of toys out of his workshop, which is covered by drifts. Lucky for us, Harold comes to the rescue and lends Santa a hand, sending him on his way to deliver presents to boys and girls all over the world.....Crockett Johnson has created a simple, gentle and really ingenious story, showing the very clever Harold at his best. Those who love Harold and the Purple Crayon, will find this holiday adventure just as wonderful and inventive. Harold at the North Pole will delight and amuse all pre-schoolers, as he helps your youngster welcome in the holiday season.

Harold, now and forever
The Harold and the Purple Crayon Series are wonderful. Harold is a little boy with a round head (around long before Charlie Brown) with a little purple crayon and a big imagination. In the North Pole book, Harold has set out on Christmas Eve to find a Christmas tree. Along the way, Harold ends up helping Santa but needs to hurry to find a tree to have it ready for Santa's visit. The simple line drawings are wonderful for younger readers yet there is always a charm to them. Harold inspires kids on so many levels; he's great for children who are timid, he's great for the mighty little explorers and he's great for kids who like to draw but feel intimidated by other artists.
